Caroline’s Baptism

We couldn’t be MORE excited about Caroline’s decision to follow Jesus!  What a sweet sweet time this has been!  About 6 weeks ago, I was putting Caroline to bed and she told me that she wanted to be baptized.  To be honest, I kind of blew her off with something like, “I’ll talk to dad about it!”  I had NO intention of letting her be baptized…after all she is 6 1/2 years old…she couldn’t possibly know why people REALLY need to be baptized…she probably wouldn’t bring it up again…we would discuss it again when she is older!  Because after all, I am her mom…I am in control…and I know what is best for her!  Right? WRONG!

So I casually mentioned it to Ben and promptly walked out of the room so we wouldn’t have to discuss it.  Just wanted to fill him in on the situation, but I definitely wasn’t going to listen to what he had to say about it…because after all I had already made up my mind.  As I was getting ready for bed that night God placed on my heart, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Mark 10:14     Yes, Yes, Yes….but that does NOT mean to let them be baptized…just TEACH them about Jesus!  Right? WRONG!

The following morning Ben said, “You know the verse that keeps coming to my mind is….yep you guessed it…THE EXACT VERSE God had placed on my heart…see that is how the Holy Spirit works.  But, even though we had been prompted with the same verse, I still wasn’t up for discussing it!

The following day Ben flat out said to me, “I feel like you are ignoring me about Caroline getting baptized…what is wrong?”  So I listed all the reasons as to why she should NOT get baptized.  He encouraged me to just talk to her about it…to which I replied…”I know how much she knows, and she is not ready!”

A week later  I was putting Caroline to bed and she said, “Hey mom have you gotten a chance to talk to dad about me getting baptized?”  OK, I thought…here goes!  I will prove to myself and Ben that she is NOT ready!

ME:  So, why do you really NEED to get baptized?  “Mom, I want to be a Christian and follow Jesus!  By being baptized I am showing God that I want to follow him!  I want him to live in my heart forever! Mom, that’s for everyone…in every country!  If they would just believe Jesus is the son of God and be baptized they could live with him forever in Heaven.”

ME:  So, why did Jesus have to DIE on the cross?  Did he really NEED to die or was that all just an accident?  “Everyone was trying to live by the LAW and just be good enough.  It is impossible to be good and perfect every day.  So God sent Jesus to die on the cross to take our place.  He was perfect…because we can’t be.”

Let me just insert CHILLS here.  I had chills all over because God was speaking through Caroline to me.  I was so convicted by her precious spirit that totally understands and takes to heart EXACTLY what God intended for all of us to believe.  It was so surreal…to hear the Lord from this precious little child.  In a daze…with chills…I walked out of her room and repented right there from being stubborn and self-righteous through this whole situation.  God spoke to me clearly that Caroline is HIS…not mine.  She is a gift to me for a short time…to be returned to HIM!  She is 100% sure of her salvation…and who am I to interfere with what HE is doing with her little soul!  Thank you LORD for capturing her heart!  You are GOOD all the time!

So I walked into Ben and said, “So when can she get baptized?”  Let me insert a little side note here:  My sweet husband was behind her decision from the very beginning…no questions asked…and patiently waited for me to come to the same conclusion on my own time.  That’s just one of the million reasons that I LOVE that guy!

We picked a Wednesday night with friends and family surrounding us to watch Caroline dedicate her life to the Lord!  We had Caroline write a letter to herself about why she wanted to be baptized.  She chose to read the letter out loud to everyone that was there.  I cry just thinking about it.  Sweet, precious, beautiful Caroline reading her 6 year old thoughts aloud was a moment I will NEVER forget!

After Caroline read her letter she went back stage to get ready with Ben.  Nino, our worship minister began to play the song 10,000 reasons (Bless the Lord) .  Nino had no idea that this song was special to me and Caroline.  Just a few days before this song had come on the radio and Caroline asked me what it was about.  I told her that it was 10,000 reasons for my soul to be thankful to the Lord for.  She said, “Oh mom, I can think of WAY more than 10,000 things to be thankful for!”  Nino playing this song was a gift to me from God…God whispering that he was completely in control of the evening.   How cool is that!?!
