Durango Ski Trip

The day after Christmas we headed to Durango, Colorado to spend time away with our family in the snow! We rented a gorgeous house on 10 acres with Philip/Aimee, Emily/Tim,  and Mimi/Grandad.  Altogether we had 8 adults and 9 kids.  I have hundreds of GREAT pictures…it was so hard to decide which ones would make the ol’ blog. (I’m making a scrapbook from the trip…so I’ll have somewhere to put the rest of the pictures!)

DAY 1:  The first day we enjoyed being around the house.  We explored, played, and relaxed!  The cousins were all excited to be together and out of the car!

Later in the afternoon we went sledding at the ski slopes.  This was ALOT of fun!  You would get going really fast down the hill.  A little out of control, but a whole lot of fun! Leighton and I got to ride together…she LOVED it!   Did I mention it was 6 degrees!?!

Day 2:  Aimee’s Birthday!  For Aimee’s birthday the girls went into town to do some shopping!  Philip took the boys hiking.  Ben and Tim kept the little ones at the house.  We all met up for dinner at a yummy Mexican Restaurant.

DAY 3:  We woke up bright and early and headed off to the ski slopes.  Whew!  This was A LOT of work!!  Carrying your own ski gear around is one thing…add to it carrying the kids stuff around as well!  CRAZY!!  By the time we stood in line for our skis, stood in line for ski school, got all of our gear on…we were ready to rest by the fire:).  The following picture that Aimee took cracks me up!  I’m leaning over helping Kellan with his ski boot, Emily is helping Cassie with her ski boot, and Philip is helping Canon with his gloves.  This is some serious TEAM WORK!!

O

We dropped all the kids off and headed up the chair lift.  It was so peaceful and beautiful!  We enjoyed skiing all day…with lunch at the lodge.

At the end of the day we picked the kids up from ski school and took them up the chair lift to a green run.  We had NO idea how they would ski.  We were all pleasantly surprised.  They all did great!  Caroline was a crazy wild child and just took off down the mountain.  She has perfect balance.  The only problem was that she didn’t know how to stop and would crash HARD!  We were a little worried.  She would stand up…we would tell her to slow down…and she would take off FAST again!  We seriously could not catch up with her.  It was crazy!  Carter and Caroline LOVED skiing!  They can’t wait to go back again!

DAY 4:  After a full day of skiing the day before, we decided we needed another day to hang and relax around the house.  We read books, put together puzzles, played games, ate yummy food, played the Wii, and watched movies.

Day 5:  We had all been looking forward to renting snow mobiles.  (Mimi and Grandad kept the little ones at the cabin)  This was by far one of our favorite things we did while we were in Colorado.  We took an hour and a half tour through the mountains.  The scenery was breath taking.  We had a blast!

We hated to see this trip come to an end.  It is so nice to get away from all the “distractions” of life.  We are blessed to have family that we truly enjoy being with!

The kids always look forward to their school Christmas parties!  We started out Carter’s second grade party with a waffle bar…complete with whipped creme, toppings of M&M’s, fruit, and sprinkles.   The kids loved making their own!  They then made an ornament…and had a book exchange.

Christmas Festivities

What a FUN December we had!  My favorite time of the year! So many fun things that I want to make sure and remember.

* The first day of December Caroline comes home from school talking about the Elf on the Shelf.  Her class had an elf…and her teacher had read the book to the class.   In the book it tells you that there is an elf in your house…you just have to find him.  So she comes home from school and spends a good hour looking for the elf in our house!  The following morning  “Jingles” the elf appeared at our house.  It was always alot of fun waking up every morning and trying to find where Jingles had hidden…or what he had gotten into!

*Once again we went to The Journey to Bethlehem at a church in Grapevine.  This live nativity is spectacular!   This is one of our favorite things we do each Christmas.  Such a vivid reminder of what the season is all about.  It makes the birth of Jesus come alive to us and our children.  For weeks after we went on “the journey” Leighton would look at the stars in the sky and point to which one was over Bethlehem:).   We enjoyed going with MiMi and Granddad and Aimee, Philip, Kellan and Canon this time.  They loved it just as much as we did!

*My sweet babysitter, Mallory, asked me if she could come over and make a gingerbread house with the kids again this year.  Of course they were super excited once again.   Their masterpiece:

i

* Our church put on their first ever BREAKFAST WITH SANTA.  It was VERY well done.  We didn’t know really what to expect…but loved every minute of it. The kids wanted to sit in Santa’s lap first thing.  Carter and Caroline told him what they wanted for Christmas.  Leighton sat up on his lap…smiled…but wouldn’t talk to him.

After visiting with Santa we ate a delicious pancake breakfast. After breakfast the kids ran over to decorate gingerbread men cookies…so cute!

i

Then off to the hot chocolate bar…

i

iii

After our tummies were all full we headed to the craft room where they made picture holders…

ii

We went into another room to make reindeer food and write letters to Santa.

Carter mailing his letter…

i

In the last room Mrs. Claus was reading the story of Jesus birth.  All three kids were mesmerized by her.  She was such a GREAT story teller!  A great way to spend a Saturday morning.

i

* The next day Caroline’s Kindergarten bible class put on a Christmas Nativity play.  She chose to be an angel.  All of the kids did a great job…and were just PRECIOUS!

ii

i

Our church youth group put on the play Narnia this year.  My niece Cassie was Mrs. Beaver and did a GREAT job!  We all love getting to watch her perform…she is a natural!  Leighton couldn’t smile in the picture below.  She was too worried that the white witch would come walking by:).

i

What a fun, yet BUSY time of year!

Ever since Caroline’s first meet in May she has been asking when she would get to compete again.  A few weeks ago she got to compete in the Christmas competition at her gym.  She was on the Reindeer team.  She did great!  You have to score a 9.0 or above to move up to the next level.  She did so on each event except the bars.  There was one skill she couldn’t do…she scored an 8.8.  We were so proud of how well she did overall!

i

i

First event was the vault…

ii

Next up was the bars.  There was one skill that she couldn’t do and she fell off.  After the meet was over she was confused why she got a red ribbon on the bars.  I explained that she had fallen on a particular skill.  She looks at me and says, “Oh, that one?  I’ll learn that tomorrow in practice.  Sure enough she worked and worked and got it perfect the following day:).

ii

After the bars was the beam…

iii

The last event was the floor.  This is her favorite!

We are so proud of you sweet Caroline!
